Last night I had one of the coolest experiences yet. After Stef, Anna, Jesse and I went to dinner at Renovati's, we walked to the Piazza di San Pietro. It was one of the most beautiful sights my eyes have ever seen. It was dark out, and the Piazza was all lit up. It was the first time this week that the realization finally hit me, that I am in Rome. I have seen that building in movies, on TV, in travel books, but there I was, standing in the middle of it, on a beautiful night, and it was amazing. Words can't describe. They really can't..I don't care how taboo my writing teachers might say that phrase it. It's something you must see (I'll attach photos!). The marble pillars, the fountain, the cobblestone street, all under the blanket of night but aglow with perfectly golden lights...I was awed. It was something an old English professor of mine would call "experiencing the numinous".
After that we caught a cab to an are called Terracio, where all the dance clubs are. IT was around 11:30 pm, and he dropped us off right in the heart of it on a street lined with about 10 discoteche. We walked to the door of a couple of them asking how much it cost to enter- quanto costo per entrare- and they all told us the price but then said something about "dopo mezza notte", which I could understand meant after midnight, but they said the rest too quickly for me to catch so I didn't know why they were letting us in. The fact that all the clubs were empty should have provided me with my answer, but it wasn't until we talked to the bouncers of a club called Coyote, who spoke English, that we found out that clubs don't even open until after midnight. However, this bouncer also told us that if we came back after midnight, and there was a line, we could bypass it entirely and he'd let us right in. So we walked around the neighborhood to kill some time, bought some Gelato- delicioso!- which we ate in a small little park, in which children were still playing at 11:45 pm! We returned around 12:20. Before we made it to the line, which was now about half a block long, we were approached by some Italian boys who were trying to get us to go dancing with them, and they wouldn't leave us alone, so we waltzed right up to the front of the line, and the bouncer admitted us with a smile and wouldn't let the buys it. It was outrageously cool. Even cooler was that we were probably the only Americans in that particular club. After about and hour or so we left, having had just enough of the Italian men, found a cab, and after the most terrifying cab ride of my life (going 70 in a 30, with the driver zipping around cars on the right and lefthand sides while talking on the phone)we arrived home safely. It was a great night. I really like the girls I was with too. I think this will be an amazing semester.
